At Greyhound Pets of America - Houston our goal is to make the perfect match between greyhound and family. Just as every hound is different (personality, temperament, energy, medical needs), every family is different (living spaces, work commitments, other human family members and pets). We take all these factors into consideration because we expect this adoptive family to be the hound’s forever home.
GPA Houston typically does not adopt to households with children under 12 years old. If you are in this situation, our adoption coordinators will work carefully with you to evaluate whether a greyhound is right for you at this time. The last thing we want is for a child to be frightened or injured, or a hound returned.
Every adoption applicant will receive a phone visit as well as a home visit. Veterinary and personal references will be checked. Because we require in-person contact, our adoption region is limited to Houston and surrounding areas.
We charge a non-refundable $25 application fee to start the process. If you are a current GPA Houston member, this fee is waived. When we receive payment, we’ll start the approval process.
Once you've been matched with your perfect greyhound, a $725 adoption fee is due.
A non-refundable application fee of $25 must be received to start the process. This fee is waived for GPA Houston members who have paid their current year membership dues. Submit your application fee here.
We appreciate you wanting to bring a greyhound into your home. In order for us to find the right pet for you, we need you to submit an adoption application. Prior to submitting your application, please have the following information available:
After we receive and review your adoption application, we will reach out to you via phone to discuss your application in more depth.
Your personal, vet, and home reference checks will be completed. Please be patient during this time.
Once your application review is complete, a Greyhound Pets of America - Houston volunteer will contact you to schedule a home visit to meet in person and discuss all-things greyhounds. During the home visit, we look for potential hazards for the dog that the adopter may not have considered. All household members must be present during the home visit. This includes all pets.
Once approved to adopt, the search for your dog begins. Volunteers will begin to evaluate pets currently in our foster care program who may be a good fit for you and your family. We will also work with our overseas partners to identify dogs which may be a good fit. Once a match has been made, the adopter(s) will submit the adoption fee of $725.
