Deedee:

DeedeeIf there were election tomorrow for Happiest Dog at GPA, Deedee would win hands down.  Almost immediately Kennelmaster Robbie knew he might as well plan on keeping her tail wrapped until she was adopted since the constant wagging signaled a case of chronic happy tail.  It wasn’t her tail, though, that was the problem.  When Deedee came in we knew she had broken her hock, but she had had surgery on the leg shortly before she came to us.    We expected that the limp would improve as the leg full healed.  However, as time went on the limp got worse rather than better and we noticed that she was unable to extend her leg normally.  We sent her for x-rays which revealed that the pin inserted in the leg during surgery had broken.   We took her to our favorite orthopedic specialist, Dr. Mike Heron, in College Station.     The site of the break in her leg was at the point where maximum pressure from the big leg muscle is put on the pin.  According to Dr. Heron, a pin put in that area will always break because no pin is strong enough to withstand the force put on it.  Fortunately, Dr. Heron, as always, had the solution.  He performed surgery on Deedee replacing the broken pin with a tension wire anchored in two places.   Unfortunately, the surgery was more difficult because the area around the break had begun to calcify and the old broken pin had to be removed, or at least as much of it was he was able to.     Deedee’s recovery period will be slower than if we had been able to take her to Dr. Heron immediately after the injury occurred.   Because her tendons have shortened she will need some physical therapy exercises after her leg heals to encourage her tendons to stretch again so she can put her foot down normally.  Fortunately, Deedee’s personality encourages us to believe that she will not let this injury slow her down forever.   The challenge is to keep her quiet so she can heal.  Even though she was in considerable pain after the surgery, she spent time in the office the next day and happily greeted visitors until she was encouraged to return to her soft bed in the corner.

Special Needs for Many:

For the first time in anyone’s memory we are asking for special needs contributions for many dogs rather than one dog.

In January of this year GPA Houston took a number of greyhounds  from the track closing in Corpus Christi.  From past experience we knew that the kennel conditions in Corpus were less than ideal, and little effort was made to control the tick population.

As a result we made the decision to test all the incoming dogs for tick-borne diseases, a problem with racing greyhounds throughout the country.  Although we believed that most of the dog already in our care would test negative, we could not pick and choose which dogs to test.

The increase in the adoption fee that went into effect late in January will cover the cost of the future tests, but will not cover treatment.

Thanks to the donation of a centrifuge and the skills of several of our members who are nurses or veterinary technicians we are able to draw the blood samples and send them to the testing lab ourselves.  We are also grateful to Tucker Lithographic for allowing us to use their Federal Express account, which saves us a great deal in overnight shipping costs.   The generosity of one of our member families at Christmas also enabled us to pay for testing all the dogs whose adoption fees did not cover the cost of testing.

Of all the greyhounds tested, we treated 11 for babesiosis and 2 for Lyme disease.

Testing and treating for tick-borne diseases is the most important decision GPA Houston has ever made to ensure the long-term health of our dogs and we will need continued support from our members to maintain this program.

The treatment cost to date is $1,640 and this figure will be updated on an ongoing basis.
