SPECIAL NEEDS HOUNDS IN OUR CARE

MojoMojo: When the Brazos County Animal Shelter called us about a 3-year-old stray greyhound, they told us there was something wrong with one of his back feet.  They were right.  We took Mojo straight to Dr. Herron who told us that he had two broken middle toes on one of his back feet.  The toes were very swollen and infected, and one had a piece of bone sticking out of the side of the toe.  He could not have surgery until the infection was treated and the swelling subsided.  So off he went to a foster home.  After a week of antibiotics and foot soaking in Epsom salts, he went back for surgery.  The dead section of bone was removed and pins were placed in both toes.  A month after surgery he will go back to College Station and have the pins removed.  Even though he was in considerable pain Mojo had a wonderful time in his foster home.  He is a very gentle and loving boy, and got along beautifully with the six resident greyhounds and small spaniel.  He has caramel colored eyes and loves to stand next to you and have his ears rubbed.

Yatzee, what a little sweetheart.  She went to a foster home after she came to us because she was a shy little girl and needed some individual attention.  When she went for her vet appointment the doctor was concerned about her blood tests and advised us to wait to have her spayed.  She was put on vitamin therapy and ultimately we ran an extensive tick panel and discovered she has one of the tick-borne diseases – babesiosis.   She was treated and retested.  She is recovering nicely and has had the benefit of being in her foster home all this time.  She is a still a little shy with strangers but happy with her foster family and will easily transfer her love to a new home with gentle people.
   Yatzee is getting less shy.

Special Needs for Many:

For the first time in anyone’s memory we are asking for special needs contributions for many dogs rather than one dog.

In January of this year GPA Houston took a number of greyhounds  from the track closing in Corpus Christi.  From past experience we knew that the kennel conditions in Corpus were less than ideal, and little effort was made to control the tick population.

As a result we made the decision to test all the incoming dogs for tick-borne diseases, a problem with racing greyhounds throughout the country.  Although we believed that most of the dog already in our care would test negative, we could not pick and choose which dogs to test.

The increase in the adoption fee that went into effect late in January will cover the cost of the future tests, but will not cover treatment.

Thanks to the donation of a centrifuge and the skills of several of our members who are nurses or veterinary technicians we are able to draw the blood samples and send them to the testing lab ourselves.  We are also grateful to Tucker Lithographic for allowing us to use their Federal Express account, which saves us a great deal in overnight shipping costs.   The generosity of one of our member families at Christmas also enabled us to pay for testing all the dogs whose adoption fees did not cover the cost of testing.

Of all the greyhounds tested, we treated 11 for babesiosis and 2 for Lyme disease.

Testing and treating for tick-borne diseases is the most important decision GPA Houston has ever made to ensure the long-term health of our dogs and we will need continued support from our members to maintain this program.

The treatment cost to date is $1,400 and this figure will be updated on an ongoing basis.
