Here is a list of some information that might help you to realize how important it is to keep your pet on heartworm preventative.   It might also be interesting to know that many of the stray greyhounds that we do take in and find a new family for have tested positive for heartworms...Visit our

Prevention?

Mosquitoes are most active in the early morning and the evening hours, so try to limit your pet's outdoor activity during these times.

*Thanks to Forest West Animal Clinic for this list of effective meds to prevent heartworms:

Heartgard
--monthly oral, Heartgard Plus will also protect against hookworms and roundworms.
Interceptor, Sentinel--monthly protection for hookworms, roundworms and also whip worms.
Filaribits--daily
Ivermectin--liquid and now available in tablet form. In approved dosage, does not prevent roundworms or other parasites.
Revolution--monthly, spot-on that also has activity against fleas, sarcoptic mange, and ear mites.
Proheart 6--injectible that lasts 6 months. (Active ingredient is Moxidectin) Some activity against hookworms also.---note: just recently (September of 2004) recalled by the FDA

Special Needs Hounds
